What is a Giclee print? Giclee prints are also called "Iris Giclee Prints" after the French company who developed this new "state of the art" technology. The word "Giclee" in French means "to spray" as the ink is actually sprayed onto the watercolor paper or canvas. Giclee printing offers the highest degree of accuracy and richness of color, providing museum quality images which are as close to the original painting as possible. Giclees are printed on smooth archival Arches watercolor paper or canvas, which makes the print very closely resemble the original. The process takes 3 or 4 times longer and the canvas is very expensive. Also, the canvas has to be tacked onto canvas stretcher bars just like an oil painting, which adds to the cost. However, each canvas will be enhanced by hand with the addition of oil paint, which will add to their value. When the canvas giclees are framed, they look just like an original oil painting.

In the words of Jeff Bass: In the vernacular of fine art lithographs, the first 10% of a print run are, traditionally, considered "artist's proofs". They're characterized that way because tweeks and adjustments are made in the printing process in that first 10%. Traditionally, the artist is present at the print run to oversee the process. I did precisely that four years ago when prints were made of a portrait I did of former President Bush for the National Museum of Naval Aviation. HIstorically, the first 10% off the press run are considered more exclusive because of the artist's oversight.

You will also receive certificates of authenticity as well as a historical synopsis for each print written by Dr. Bill Leary.

The canvas giclee is framed just like an oil painting with no glass or mat. The print on paper should be framed with a mat and glass.
